Scam Targeting Therapists

Miranda Palmer (the techy therapist). I wanted to give everyone in the area a head's up about a scam that is targeting healing professionals. It sometimes is targeted at massage therapists, other times at marriage and family therapists.

This morning I got an oddly worded e-mail that had a lot of key words or jargon in it. It reminded me of some scam e-mails I have seen go around in the past. So, I googled a little portion, and went directly to an article about massage therapists being scammed.

The scam goes like this- someone is visiting the area and wants to pre-pay for therapy services. They cut you a check for far greater than the number of sessions say "oops!" and then ask you to deposit the check and just refund the difference. Then, a few weeks later (because it is an international check), the check is found to be a fraud and you are out the amount of the over-payment that you refunded.

Here is an example of how these e-mails are worded (except that they put in therapy terms).

Am Dr Russell,i will be in your city on the 29th of August and i need more details about your service and sessions,i will be staying 2 months or more.Kindly let me know your charges and details if you offer any of Deep Tissue,Energetic and sport Massage so that i will book ahead before coming.

Just want people to be aware and on guard. Of course we get clients from other countries, but be very careful in screening. Here is an article for the massage therapist association that has several examples of these different types of emails.

Website 101 for Therapists

Everyone is telling therapists you *have to* get a website, but many therapists aren't really sure why (beyond someone trying to get them to spend a lot of time, money, and energy). Websites can be amazing resources for therapists and our community- but not every therapist needs one. And, not every website is worth your time, energy and money.

Miranda Palmer, LMFT and Kelly Higdon, LMFT have developed a *free website 101 for therapists <>*. It is a 6 day video e-course where they break down website basics into little 10 minute videos that put things in non-technical wording that therapists really get! We review options like Wordpress for Therapists,, free options and more to let you know what is worth your money, what isn't, and what services might just be lying about what you * actually* get! (We aren't huge fans of people who say things that aren't true).

You can watch their free 5 minute video "The New Rules of Private Practice" and get signed up for the free e-course here:

Here is what other therapists are saying about the free website 101 ecourse for therapists:

Thank-you Ladies for website 101. It has been helpful in so many ways. The information you continue to share assists in bring some clarity to a maze of information
